We found the Second Division side very difficult to break down and even after 120 minutes of play the scores remained blank.
The first threat on goal was a 25 yarder from Billy Gallacher, but Billy Thomson smothered it with no undue problems. We hit back when Alan Irvine was released by Maurice Malpas, but Alan's chip failed to beat the keeper. Buckley shot over as the half finished on a livelier note.
Dave Lawrie was under greater pressure in the second half, culminating in a fine save to divert a Malpas shot round the post. Brechin retaliated and John Clark twice averted dangerous situations.
The match moved into extra-time and provided the best chance of the game. Paul Sturrock raced in on goal but Lawrie saved his shot. In the second period of extra-time the Brechin keeper saved an lan Redford shot to ensure that a penalty shoot-out would be required. We scored from all five penalties taken by (in order) Sturrock, J. McLeod, Clark, Redford'and Malpas. The vital penalty miss came from Brechin's Dave Watt whose shot was saved by Billy Thomson.
