Match Report

United earned their first1 silverware of the season by narrowly defeating Arbroath in a match played to commemorate the Angus side's world record victory of 36-0 over Bon Accord a hundred years ago. As promised, manager Jim McLean fielded his strongest team available, given the absence of Maurice Malpas and Richard Gough, both on World Cup duty. Meanwhile, Arbroath were strengthened by the inclusion of Hearts pair Walter Kidd and Sandy Clark. early dominance by United brought us the lead after 14 minutes. A great move involving Dave Narey and Billy Kirkwood and Billy's diagonal cross was deftly head flicked past Jackson by Ian Redford.

Iain MacDonald, a second half substitute swept the ball in from a George Mackie corner. Mom then on the sides were deadlocked until the dying minute. A terrible blunder between Derek Jackson and Kenny Taylor allowed Paul Sturrock to nip in and prevent penalties deciding the issue.
