Match Report

Only 2543 people turned out for this match in Atlanta between Aston Villa and Dundee United. The game didn't start until 9:30pm. The local boy scouts had a mass convention and had to practice on the pitch in the early evening, hence the delay to kick off time.

The first half belonged to Aston Villa. Brian Tyler received a through pass from Ferguson he drew Mackay and flicked home over the 'keepers head. Twelve minutes later they went further ahead. Mike Ferguson dribbled the ball down the left wing. It seemed as if he was going to centre, but he surprised everybody, including Mackay, by scoring with a shot from 25 yards. This shook United and they came more and more into the game. Just before half-time a corner was cleared off the line by a Villa defender. It came to Davie Wilson whose centre was brilliantly headed into the net by Kenny Cameron.

It was all United now. In 69 minutes a shot bounced off goalkeeper John Donne and Kenny Cameron belted into the net. In the last 10 minutes United tailed off a little, and Villa came close to scoring. A goal by either side was chalked off because of off-side late in the match. Both Wood and Wright had their names taken by referee Bobby Davidson as tempers flared a number of times. Straight after the game both sides caught the same plane for the return game in Dallas.
