This unusual clash was settled by Craig Brewster's 36th minute goal, but United might well have won by more against a side which has nose-dived from the Premiership to the Endsleigh Second Division in successive seasons.
Although the Tangerines dominated the early part of proceedings, playing some impressive one-touch football, it was Swindon who almost went ahead on the halfhour mark. Thorne met Gooden's cross and directed his header down into the ground and up and over the bar. That incident apart, Swindon never looked like breaching a sound United back four. Six minutes later came the decisive goal. Andy McLaren's comer was headed clear but only as far as Billy McKinlay who was lurking on the edge of the box.
His first time shot kept low and was deflected past Digby by Craig Brewster. The Swindon keeper prevented a second goal twenty minutes into the second period when he tipped Andy McLaren's 25 yarder round the post after the United man had picked up a stray Swindon pass. And two minutes later the English side's goal survived an even luckier escape when Robbie Winters cruised past a defender in the inside-left channel, but his curling shot came back off the face of the cross bar.
Two minutes from time United again hit the woodwork, David Hannah forced the ball through to Craig Brewster and his angled drive came back off the base of the post and Bodin managed to clear off the line after the ball had rebounded goalwards off his shin.
