The recent renamed Tannadice Park (formerly Clepington Park) played host to the Hibernians of both Dundee and Edinburgh, as the new Dundee Hibs played their first ever game in front of an estimated crowd of 7,000 people. Both clubs had registered to play in similarly dark "bottle" green colours for the match. To avoid a clash, the Edinburgh side borrowed the jerseys of neighbouring Leith Athletic, who played in black and white hoops.
Dundee's Lord Provost Sir James Urqhuart performed the ceremonial kick-off and a sizeable crowd of 7,000 witnessed the non-League newbies draw 1-1 with their Division One guests, with Jamie Docherty having the honour of scoring the first ever goal for Dundee Hibernian.
Adding some anticipation to the game, Pat Reilly, both a cycle manufacturer and secretary of the Dundee Hibs, promised a brand new bicycle to the scorer of the first goal to be scored on the newly laid pitch. That reward fell upon the Edinburgh Hibs' John O'Hara, who gave his side the lead during the second half before the homesters equalised.
