After four successive defeats United were far from confident concerning their visit to Fir Park, despite a good record there. However, after a remarkable and brave display by the ten-man Tannadice side, a point was salvaged. The reduction in United's numbers occurred after only 35 minutes when Stewart Fraser went down after a tackle on former United favourite Wattie Carlyle and had to be assisted to the pavilion (no substitutes in those days). Despite this setback United still maintained their ascendancy and the home side were unable to make their numerical advantage count. Indeed United took the lead with only 13 minutes remaining when Orjan Persson crossed for Finn Døssing to nod home. But just in the dying minutes Motherwell grabbed the leveller through Joe McBride who hammered home unchallenged.
