Match Report

United emerged with a great deal of credit from the Dewar Shield Final, despite losing by the odd goal in five against Division One contenders Aberdeen. In keeping with most of their games so far this season, United conceded first, and early on, Alec Cheyne netting with a header. A quickfire brace from Alex Merrie left United reeling at half time, now 3-0 down. Shortly before the interval, Duncan Hutchison beat Quill with a first time cross from the left, but the goal was disallowed for off-side.

Geordie Henderson, who had continually threatened, eventually pulled a goal back for United after twenty minutes of the second half, with a special effort. It was a fitting way to score his first for the Club, and a very welcome lifeline for the men in black and white. Duncan Yuill, the Aberdeen goalkeeper, was then forced to withdraw after he was accidentally kicked in the head by his team mate Willie Jackson. The player was carried from the field before play resumed and United capitalised on the man advantage through Duncan Hutchison who beat the stand-in custodian Jackson to reduce the leeway to a single goal. Despite United's best attempts to snatch a draw, the Pittodrie men held on for the win, as Yuill reappeared to see out the last five minutes, his head swathed in bandages.

Post-match, ex-Baillie James Stewart of Perth, president of the Dewar Shield competition, presented the trophy and gold watches to the winning side.
