A United X1 was sent out for this match with Stenhousemuir, a number of the reserves and youths got a chance to show Jim McLean what they had to offer.
United made a great start to the game and should have been at least two goals up by half time. The first chance went to Dolan who shot past when well placed in the box. Soon after, Kirkwood had an easy chance but he fluffed his shot. Stenhousemuir were giving as much as they got, but Graham in the United goal was seldom in action in the opening 45 minutes.
In the second half, United substituted Lorimer for Holt. Following this, United applied more pressure with some good moves coming from wingers Smith and Cavanagh. But poor finishing was the order of the day and chances went begging. Thirteen minutes from time, United had the best move of the game. Murray slipped the ball to Kopel who saw Smith running. Kopel passed the ball to Smith but he shot straight into the 'keepers hands. The Tanandice club went close when a free-kick, taken at the edge of the box by Lorimer, skimmed over the bar. Stenhousemuir hit back, and Graham had to make a do or die save from Jenkins. In the final stages United were forced into defence and except for the occasional breakaway were seldom seen as an attacking force. Among the visitors at the game was Mr Jock Stein of Celtic accompanied by Southampton manager Laurie McMenemy.
