Match Report

Hearts all-conquering side travelled to Tannadice requiring only three points from their last three fixtures to win the First Division championship. And it showed in a nervy Tynecastle display after United went into an early lead. A Jimmy Briggs free-kick was deflected onto a post and Finn Døssing required no second bidding to ram the ball home. In fact throughout that opening half it was the brilliance of Jim Cruickshank which kept United from a match-winning interval lead. After the break it was the chance for Donald Mackay to continue the goalkeeping heroics at the same end as Hearts powered forward. But the leveller came with 17 minutes remaining when Willie Wallace latched on to a defensive clearance and blasted the ball home from 20 yards.
