Match Report

United's second match during their Dutch tour was against Eredivisie side FC Utrecht, undoubtedly their sternest taste of their pre-season so far. Jackie McNamara named an eleven that looked like a likely example of his team for the season ahead, with eight substitutes, including new signing Mario Bilate.

Chances for both sides in the opening 25 minutes heralded no goals, with Ryan Dow shooting wide for United and Leon de Kogel forcing a save from Radoslaw Cierzniak, but it was United on the half hour mark who first found the net - Nadir Ciftci the scorer - however referee Bas Nijhuis adjudged that the Turkish striker had fouled a defender and the goal was disallowed. Leon de Kogel again tested Cierzniak with a header as the action heated up, however the score remained 0-0 at the interval.

Utrecht undoubtedly started the second half best, scoring within three minutes of the restart through Jens Toornstra. United hardly had time to regroup when de Kogel completed what he had threatened during the first half and beat Cierzniak to make it 2-0. The same man headed just over moments later as United tried to weather the storm. A Ryan Dow volley moments later was tipped past the post as United looked for a way back in, and a number of substitutions followed for both sides. A goal finally came for United in the 85th minute through Brian Graham, as he combined with fellow substitute Charlie Telfer who made an excellent run and pass for the striker to slip the ball across the goalkeeper and into the net at the far post. A last minute chance to equalise fell to Mario Bilate on the rebound following a Chris Erskine strike, but the Dutchman's shot flew wide.
