Match Report

McNamara made three changes from the side that lost to Ross County at Tannadice on Saturday, with defender Ryan McGowan returning from suspension to replace John Souttar, while Calum Butcher returned in place of Paul Paton and Henri Anier came in for Blair Spittal.

There was a sign of things to come early in this game when Dundee threatened from a corner kick. The ball into the box had United at sixes and sevens before being knocked behind. United’s first opportunity came to Aidan Connolly. He powered forward before setting free McGowan on the right. The Transfer window signing fired in a great ball but Anier couldn’t connect. Kevin Thomson the. Went close for Dundee with an effort well held by Cierzniak. The lively Connolly then had a cross knocked behind by Thomas Konrad and a Ciftci had an attempt well held by Scott Bain. With 13 minutes on the clock Dundee took the lead. Cierzniak appeared to have control of a Greg Stewart effort but as he knelt down to collect, the ball squirmed through his legs and into the goal. United responded immediately when Erskine fired a shot that struck Kevin Thomson on the arm. A spot kick was awarded and Nadir Çiftçi slotted home his second penalty in four days to level the match. Cierzniak made up for his howler by pulling out a fantastic one-handed stop from another Stewart effort. But Dundee took the lead for the second time when centre-half James McPake rose unchallenged in the area to head a corner beyond Cierzniak.

United replaced the ineffective Henri Anier with youngster Blair Spittal. In the opening quarter hour, the best spell of pressure came from a couple of corners, when a Ciftci cross was headed wide and a Rankin shot from the resultant corner was deflected behind. United also had a Butcher effort pushed past by Bain. Against the run of play, Dundee went 3-1 ahead when Paul Heffernan, knocked the ball over the line after an inviting cross found him urchin in at the back post. With 15 minutes remaining, Jackie McNamara made his last throw of the dice, by bringing on Robbie Muirhead for Calum Butcher. However, by this time the little confidence United had left following their recent poor run was being drained. United were reduced to half chances as Dundee managed the game and held on for a long awaited derby victory.

Manager's Comment:
“I'm Extremely disappointed, I thought first half we were causing them problems but the second half we didn't do enough to challenge them going forward. They're not bad players, they're suffering a little bit in confidence with the things that have happened in the last number of weeks so we need to put that right."

Fan's Comment:
“This felt like a pivotal match for the club. It is clear that patience is running thin the United support with a number now asking serious questions about the direction the team are moving in. Derby defeat is hard to take and the fact that no-one seems to want to claim3rd spot makes it all the more frustrating. The number of goals we are conceding is deeply concerning. We need an ugly 1-0 win to try and make a tentative step into a recovery.”
