Dundee Hibs made their initial appearance at Gayfield last night, when they engaged Arbroath in a match in aid of the scheme for the erection of a clubhouse by the Arbroath Artisan Golf Club at Elliot. There was a good turnout of spectators.
Play for a considerable period may be said to have been pretty equally divided. If there was anything to distinguish between the teams, the balance favoured the Maroons. Both sets of forwards were nimble and tricky, but the high wind which prevailed spoilt the work in front of goal. At one period, the home forwards almost rushed the ball through in a body, but a corner saved the situation for the Dundee men.
In the second half, Brown got clearly away on the left, and despite the attentions of Guild and Ferguson, sent well in. Anderson fouled the ball within the penalty area and James Strachan, taking the kick, scored, although Johnstone managed to touch the sphere. Smith sent in a couple of dangerous crosses from the right, but they were of no avail. The Hibs' forwards had more to show for their labours, James Burns scoring a second goal. It was a nicely taken point. The visitors pressed with more consistency than their opponents, but there was no further scoring.
