Match Report

Four days removed from their opening pre-season tour match against Vitesse, United traveled North to Dirkshorn where they met AZ Alkmaar in a friendly match. An ailing Aidan Connolly missed out on the game, while Ryan Dow, who came off injured in the Vitesse match, also remained back at the team hotel.

German 'stopper Luis Zwick was handed the first team goalkeeper spot for the first time and started well, tipping a Steven Berghuis shot away from goal on ten minutes. A Dillon block six minutes later from Markus Henriksen kept AZ at bay but only delayed the opener which arrived shortly after. Zwick was again called into action, dealing with a Hupperts shot from a Muhren cut back, but he could do nothing to prevent Henriksen from knocking the rebound in the net from close range. United equalised two minutes before the half hour mark through Blair Spittal, who hammered the ball low into the net from fully 25 yards. Chances for Murray and Souttar towards the end of the first half heralded no further scoring as the sides went in level at the break.

Murray offered Gino Coutinho a test seven minutes after the restart, forcing a save before Ryan McGowan went close with a header. Luis Zwick's heroics were on display again moments later when Muamer Tankovic forced the United 'keeper to save, but on 58 minutes, Derrick Luckassen found the net with a long range free kick to restore the Dutch side's lead. A raft of substitutions followed for both sides, including trialist Rodney Sneijder, brother of Galatasaray midfielder Wesley, who came on for United. With twelve minutes remaining, AZ went two ahead from the penalty spot after Coll Donaldson had committed a foul in the area, Jeffrey Gouweleeauw doing the honours.
