Defeat in Lens, our first of the season, was at least not irreversible in view of tonight’s second leg. The first half failings we have experienced so much this season were again in evidence as the French side dominated rather than controlled.

However, a goal-less first half looked on the cards until the French side produced a piece of magic. Njo-Lea, who had been a constant source of danger, combined with Carreno to allow the latter to shoot high into the roof of the net.

If Lens had the better of the first half then the opposite applied in the second. Twice we had the ball in the net, but Paul Sturrock and Kevin Gallacher’s efforts were chalked off. Illustrating our dominance was the fact their 'keeper was pulled up for time wasting, yet our task tonight could have been of gargantuan proportions had a shot not slipped just the wrong side of the post and another strike the post in the dying minutes as Lens hit us on the break.
