Pre-match expectation that this would be a tough tie proved all to accurate. We started in confident mood with skipper Paul Hegarty going close on a couple of occasions. The first evidence that Queens were going to be difficult to beat came in the 20th minute when Jim Robertson shot over with a clear view of goal. Paul Sturrock went close twice ten minutes later before the home side appeared to take lead when Bryce shot home. The referee, however, chalked it off for offside.
Immediately after half-time Cochrane got a header that was deflected for a corner. On the hour mark we took the lead. Dave Bowman picked up a loose ball and slid the ball to Kevin Gallacher who fired the ball past Davidson. Within a minute John Clark might have made it two, but his header slipped just wide off the post. Queens chased the equaliser in the closing stages and looked to have been handed a lifeline when Clay's run into the box was curtailed by Billy Thomson. After recovering from his tumble Cloy got up to take the spot-kick, but Billy Thomson, diving to his left, blocked his effort to give us the narrowest of wins in this first League Cup meeting between the sides. Norrie Anderson of Queens was named Man of the Match.
