Ten minutes were left on the clock and Hearts led by a single goal. The prospect of a united win looked remote to say the least. Yet the final scoreline made a mockery of such gloomy thoughts amongst the Tannadice faithful. To be fair they had earlier seen Hearts dominate the first half, during which the visitors had the ball in the net on three occasions. Fortunately only one counted. That came in the 27th minute when Colquhoun bore in on goal only to have his shot blocked by Billy Thomson. The ball broke to John Robertson who gratefully accepted the rebound. With Dave Narey and John Holt both clearing goal bound shots off the line you can see that it was an uncomfortable first 45 minutes. Penalty claims for a push on Maurice Malpas was about the closest we came to any form of threat on Henry Smith's goal.
Gradually as the second half progressed Hearts' stranglehold of the midfield was prised open. Ian Redford might have equalised midway through the half, but his chip drifted marginally past, Then Jim McInally and Eamonn Bannon combined to give Paul Sturrock a clear view of goal and Luggy slotted the ball past Smith. Two minutes later Eamonn Bannon embarked on a run from midfield, and from the edge of the box he dragged the ball wide to the left before firing in a superb low shot to the far post. Remarkably, Iain Ferguson's last minute goal was even more breath-taking. Fergie robbed Sandy Jardine 40 yards out and promptly propelled a lob high into the net over a bemused Henry Smith. That completed a blistering ten minute spell which plucked two points out of the jaws of defeat.
