Match Report

The United side received a standing ovation for their achievement in reaching the final of the UEFA Cup, but three of the European heroes, John Holt, Paul Sturrock and Ian Redford were missing either through injury or suspension. We overcame that handicap and made an excellent start.

John Clark was just off target with a free header from the corner and a couple of minutes later only an incredible save by Manley when he blocked a fiercely struck Eamonn Bannon volley. Three minutes later there was a shock in store at the other end. Paul Hegarty was adjudged to have brought down McGivern in the box and Ken Eadie hammered in a low shot from the spot. Iain Ferguson did have the ball in the net but was ruled offside. Before the interval Billy Thomson had to come to the rescue after Stewart pounced on a mistake by John Clark.

Only three minutes of the second half had elapsed when we equalised. Paul Hegarty sent a high ball into the Falkirk penalty area, John Clark nodded it on, and Ian McLeod knocked the ball clear, it landed in the path of Iain Ferguson who blasted in a shot from a very acute angle, which beat Marshall at his left hand post. Billy Thomson was again a saviour when he blocked McGovern after he took advantage of a short pass back by Jim Mdnally. With John Clark having operated up front during the second half we had looked more penetrating but it wasn't until three minutes from the end that we notched the winner. Jim Mdnally picked up a loose ball on the left, released a perfect ball to Eamonn Bannon who sped to the bye-line before cutting the ball back for Iain Ferguson to apply the perfect finish. Even then the drama wasn't finished. Billy Thomson, yet again, pulled off a magnificent save from a last minute free-kick.
