In the wake of losing in Gothenburg, an injury depleted Tannadice eleven fell behind to an early freakish own goal from which they never recovered.
With two major Cup Finals looming, third place secured and a European place already guaranteed it was not entirely surprising that genuine goal efforts from the men in tangerine were few and far between. Indeed, a John Holt volley, which went narrowly past only two minutes into the match, was the closest we came to scoring. Gordon Mair on the left for Motherwell was proving a handful, and he engineered their winner. He beat Billy Kirkwood near the bye-line and his low cut-back was deflected by Dave Beaumont and left Scott Thomson helpless.
The second half was relatively quiet. Scott Thomson did bring off a fine save from a Smith header, and towards the end there was a surge forward by us in the closing stages but it was too little too late to prevent Motherwell recording their first victory of the season over us.
