The SPL campaign kicked off at Tannadice Park with the visit of Hibernian. Six debuts for Ian McCall's side after a close season spent adding to the squad.
United dominated possession in the first half. However, a mixture of goood defending from Hibs and a lack of final third quality conspired to keep the game goal-less at half time. It didn't take long in the second half though for United to open their goalscoring account for the season. Billy Dodds did well to dispossess Doumbe an advance into the area before he gave the ball to Collin Samuel who made no mistake from six yards out.
Against the run of play a Hibs cross set up the equaliser as the ball deflected off Alan Archibald and over the head of Paul Gallacher. The ball landed at the feet of Derek Riordan and he turned the ball home at the back post. The momentum stayed with the visitors and unfortunately for United it would be Hibs who would find a winner in the match. Ian Murray was pulled back by Barry Robson and the referee awarded a penalty as well as showing a red card to Robson. Tam McManus beat Gallacher from the spot and received a yellow card for over celebrating the winning goal.
