United travelled to Germany for this UEFA Cup 3rd Round 2nd Leg tie with over 35,000 fans turning out to create a fantastic atmosphere.
No team could have asked for a better beginning in an away tie than United achieved. Within three minutes they had silenced the stadium by taking the lead from their first corner. As Milne took it on the right, Paul Hegarty slipped in on the blind side to head into the bottom corner of the net. Rudi Voller was the biggest threat for the home side and goal scorer Hegarty, had to use his other talents to produce a superb tackle on the German striker. The Bremen manager made an incredibly early substitution when he removed defender Camp and replaced him with forward Bounce. The forward made an instant impact and only a good tackle from Stark prevented him breaking through on goal. McAlpine then had to save a dangerous header from his own player, Gough. Just before the break, Dodds had a magnificent chance after Hegarty nodded down a Bannon chip. The striker inexplicably hit the ball against Burdenski from six yards.
Shortly after the break it was United's chance for a let-off. Substitute Schaaf, who had replaced Gruber, chipped the ball over from just a few yards and Volley also missed a glaring chance, heading past the post from a couple of yards out. However, two minutes later the same combination did the trick for the Germans. Rudi Voller equalised with a header from Schaafs cross. United almost hit back immediately with a ferocious Bannon drive which came off the bar. The crowd were deafening as Werder hit the bar and then Hegarty amazingly cleared a netbound Voller lob off the line as United survived a second half assault to qualify for the next round.
