Played at a frantic pace, this match resembled a cup-tie and a share of the spoils was no more than either side deserved after 90 minutes which had the fans on their toes throughout. Yet United will regard this as a point lost after taking a two-goal lead.

Paul Sturrock set up the first in four minutes when Billy Kirkwood ran on to his lay-off to hammer in an unsaveable shot past Thomson from 12 yards. Despite a hectic spell of pressure United retained their lead until the interval.

Just three minutes after the interval Billy Kirkwood scored an even more spectacular second goal. Saints refused to lie down and headers from Billy Abercrombie and Frank McAvennie within the space of six minutes brought the home side level.
