Although Hearts were depleted through injury and suspension, United found the Tynecastle side in a highly competitive mood and it was that attitude which was largely accountable for the 'Jam Tarts" success. Having booked the advantage of a very strong wind, Hearts got off to the best possible start with a goal in 90 seconds. Berry forced a corner on the right, and Colquhoun's cross was powerfully headed in by Roddy MacDonald from the edge of the box.
After the change-round, the wind seemed to drop a knot or two and United twice came close. First a superb cross by Eamonn Bannon was headed against the post by Ian Redford, who shortly afterwards brought out a good save from Smith. John Robertson's introduction after an hour gave Hearts added punch and the young striker sealed Hearts' victory when he lobbed the ball over Hamish McAlpine after a clearance from a corner had been knocked back in by Cowie.
