Match Report

This match, that had so much bearing on the destination of the title, saw United dominate for the most part, yet end up well beaten!

The first-half set the pattern for future events. As early as the second minute, John Holt surged into the box, and his angular drive was only a fraction wide of the far post. Paul Sturrock then volleyed a Kevin Gallacher cross just past the near post. Mid-way through the half, Hearts, with virtually their only shot of the opening period, scored. Levein's long-ball into the United box was headed away by Paul Hegarty, but only as far as John Robertson, who struck a half-volley of stunning power into the top left-hand corner. Henry Smith defied Davie Dodds with a brilliant save, and the same player just failed to connect with a Sturrock lay-off as we continued to dictate play, but unable to pierce Hearts' 'iron curtain' defence.

Two minutes into the second-half came, perhaps the game's turning point. Eamonn Bannon's free-kick bounced off the Hearts' wall to Maurice Malpas who crashed in an apparently unsaveable shot, but Henry Smith defied the laws of nature to pull off the save of the season. Ten minutes later a long, curling cross from Berry was nodded into the middle by Colquhoun and Sandy Clark slipped the bail into the net for their second. Eight minutes later the match was ended as a contest when Colquhoun set John Robertson clear, the striker proceeded to round Billy Thomson and bring joy to the Maroon support behind that goal.
