A Jon Daly hat-trick and two goals from David Goodwillie gave United a comfortable victory at Central Park in this CIS Cup second round tie. John Dempster did grab a consolation goal for Cowdenbeath as United’s quest for their first clean sheet of the season continued.
It took United 30 minutes to break down the home side when an inswinging Craig Conway corner was headed home by Jon Daly. Eleven minutes later a David Goodwillie shot from the back post deflected into the net off Cowdenbeath captain Sandy Hodge to put United 2-0 up at half-time. Two minutes after the break, Jon Daly put the game beyond doubt with a measured finish before David Goodwillie grabbed his second on the hour mark. Dempster pulled one back after 73 minutes but Jon Daly completed the scoring and his own hat-trick with 10 minutes left.
United boss Levein was satisfied with the performance but admitted ‘a clean sheet would have been nice’. He said that he had taken a risk with his selection but knew that a lot of the players brought in ‘had something to prove’.
