Hailing from Johnshaven, Bill spent his youth football days with Whifflet Emerald before playing junior football with Carluke Rovers. He had already spent time on trial with St Johnstone in the Alliance league while still playing for Carluke when he made his first appearances for United as a trialist during the first half of the 1933-34 season. He later signed terms with United and went on to play for the rest of the season and was retained at the end of 1933-34. He was an ever present in the side in 1934-35 but featured less frequently in the season that followed before he was released to join Montrose in April 1936.
A fit and athletic sportsman throughout his career, in his profession he was noted as a "burly gymnastic instructor" who completed his studies at Jordanhill College in Glasgow while playing for United. He was equally proficient at tennis, having played in several regional competitions. In his later years he was also noted for his rugby skills. He later played for Dundee before the advent of WW2.
After the war and having retired as a player after a brief return to Montrose, he was appointed as superintendent of physical education in Angus and also became a member of Scottish FA coaching committee. In later life, he became physical training director for Dundee schools.
