Biography

Ian was signed by Preston North End as an apprentice in 1977 and made 3 full appearances, scoring twice before the striker returned to Scotland in March 1980 to sign for United. He made his debut as a substitute against Hibs at Easter Road in April, coming on for the last 13 minutes, but that was to be his one and only appearance in a tangerine shirt.

After just a few more reserve games, Morton manager and former United player Benny Rooney took him to Greenock for around £5,000 in September 1981. Ian scored the winner in a victory over his former club soon after, as United went down 1-0 at Cappielow, and Ian went on to be a regular in the Morton team for the next three seasons. He left for Hamilton Academical in August 1983, and had spells with Queen of the South and Partick Thistle over the next 18 months. In November 1984 he joined Cowdenbeath where he spent two seasons before dropping down to the Juniors.
