Alex was with East Fife before joining Bristol Rovers and then Bristol City. At the outbreak of WW2, United obtained permission to play him and he was in the side throughout season 1939-40, playing his part in taking United to the Emergency War Cup final. He was called up for military service in May 1940.

Dundee United put the Warriors through their paces at Ochilview. And if the margin was slender there was no doubt about the visitors being the more skilful side. Gray missed a penalty for the homesters, but against that United might well have gained another two goals but for their keeper's remarkable clearances of shots from White and Gardiner.
