Lesslie signed for United on an 'S' form from Celtic Boys Club in 1977, making the step up to the reserves in September 1978. A regular at that level over the next three years, he made a scoring first team debut against Arbroath in a Forfarshire Cup tie in August 1979, but played just once more, in a friendly against Hearts in February 1980.

In the spring of 1981 Gerry was transferred to Brechin City for a fee of around £5,000. He was with the Glebe Park side for four years, winning the Second Division Championship and promotion to the First Division in 1983.
