Neil was a student at Edinburgh University and an amateur player with Leith Athletic. He came to Dundee to begin his career in journalism and remained with United for a season during which he proved his worth with a creditable haul of goals, and was also made team captain for a short spell.
As an amateur he was automatically released at the end of the season and did not re-sign when offered, although he did turn out for United once more in an emergency.
After World War II he became an author, writing several award winning stories, and in 1960 his screenplay for the movie Room At The Top won the Oscar for Best
Screenplay Base On Material From Another Medium, beating the likes of Some Like It Hot and Ben Hur.
