Biography

Gary signed on an 'S' form from Fairmuir Boys Club and progressed through the youth programme. A Scotland youth, he came to the public’s attention when he played in the 1989 Under-16 World Cup final against Saudi Arabia, and went on to play as a Scotland Under-21. He was also a twice winner of BP Youth Cup with United.

He was playing reserve team football by 1989-90 and made his first team debut as a substitute in a friendly against an Australian Olympic XI in August 1990. His competitive debut was as a substitute against Rangers in April 1991 aged 18, and made frequent appearances in each of the next five seasons. A solid, attacking full-back, he scored twice against Dundee at Dens Park during the 1992-93 season, in a 3-1 win in November and then again in a 4-0 victory in April. In 1994, after playing in the semi-final replay against Aberdeen at Hampden, he collected a Scottish Cup winner’s medal as an unused substitute in the final against Rangers, as the Club won the trophy for the first time.

During the 1994-95 season, Gary was involved in a contract dispute with the club, and in January 1995 he was transferred to Rangers along with Alex Cleland in a deal reported at £750,000. In three years with the Ibrox club he rarely made the starting eleven and spent October 1997 on loan to Wolves. In February 1998 he moved to St Johnstone, where he spent three years, collecting a League Cup runners up medal. A move to First Division champions Livingston followed in 2001, and when he played for them in the UEFA Cup, it meant that he had made appearances for four different Scottish clubs in European competition. Gary returned to United in January 2003 just before the arrival of Ian McCall as manager, and over the next year he made only 15 appearances, and left to join Motherwell in January 2004. He later had spells with Clyde, Brechin City and Carnoustie Panmure before retiring.

In 2007 he took up a Youth coaching position with Clyde, and became manager of Livingston in 2009, leading them to two successful promotions after their demotion to the Third Division. Following his controversial dismissal in 2012, he had managerial spells at Airdrieonians, Forfar Athletic and Cowdenbeath.
