Jimmy was a schoolboy international who signed from Newburgh West End. Although he had just two seasons at Tannadice, he was a big favourite with supporters and there was disappointment when he left at the end of 1926-27, still just eighteen years old, to join Rangers for a fee said to be in the region of £2,500 (although some reports quoted the figure at much less).
He went on to become a Scotland international and in 1941, he made a brief return to United before moving on to join St Mirren. His son was Ronnie Simpson the popular Celtic and Scotland goalkeeper.
