Dundee United 2 - 1 Inverness Caledonian Thistle
League (SPL)
Grant was born on this date in Edinburgh.

A little piece of history was made today as United took on Inverness Caledonian Thistle on League business for the first time. United lined up in 4-4-2 formation. There were three changes to United’s starting line-up from the CIS win over Stranraer with Stuart Duff, James Grady and Andy McLaren all dropping to the bench. Jim McIntyre joined Jason Scotland in attack and Billy Dodds was handed a starting spot in the centre of midfield. The warmest welcome of the day was reserved for his central midfield partner, new signing Grant Brebner. The former Hibs man would have required little introduction to most Arabs having made quite an impression at Tannadice on several previous occasions – not least when he scored a hat-trick to put United out the Scottish Cup in January 2003.
United manager Ian McCall made three personnel changes for this CIS cup match against First Division high flyers Clyde. A change of goalkeeper was enforced, with Lars Hirschfeld making his first competitive start ahead of Tony Bullock, who broke a collar bone during the defeat to Motherwell at the weekend. Also starting were Stuart Duff at right back, which allowed Mark Wilson to move into a more central midfield position, and Andy McLaren, who was being given a chance to impress in place of the unavailable James Grady. Visitors Clyde would have viewed the fixture as an opportunity to compare themselves against SPL opposition, with promotion to the top flight their top priority this season.
United welcomed Hearts to Tannadice today as the SPL fixtures drew to a close prior to the top six/bottom six split. After last week's heroics in Glasgow, United came out to great applause from a good home support - buoyed by recent performances and results, not to mention the chance of a voucher for a Cup Final ticket. The match was evenly contested by both sides and not even a puncture on the Kingsway on the way home could detract from a great end to a week when we've all been proud to be an Arab again. United kicked off in a 3-5-2 formation and seemed keen to continue their recent good form. Mark Kerr and Grant Brebner continued in central midfield after their performances at Hampden and Ibrox last week.
Although Barry Robson incredibly hit the woodwork three times, all with headers, no one can deny that ICT were the worthy winners.
* - Billy Dodds only game as interim manager
Hearts kicked off in front of a healthy crowd but it was United who threatened first. Ex Hibs player Grant Brebner endeared himself to the Jambos by shooting wide in the first minute. United seemed intent on avoiding the errors of the last meeting between the sides at Tannadice when the visitors were allowed to dominate the early exchanges.
In a quiet first half, made all the more difficult for both sides by a fierce gusting cross-field wind, chances were few and far between, as was attractive football in all honesty. The first chance came through a 30-yard free kick from Charlie Mulgrew, which didn’t quite bend enough as it went wide of Brown’s goal.
