Biography

A youth player with ADO Den Haag, Nadir played his first full professional season with Portsmouth at the age of 18 before leaving for Turkey to play for Kayserispor, and NAC Breda the following season. Out of contract in 2013, Nadir signed for United following a trial spell during the pre-season of 2013-14.

Nadir is a Turkish national, and by the time of his Tannadice arrival he had been capped at Under-19 level with Turkey, despite having played for the Netherlands as a youth.

Getting off the mark in his first season with goals in all competitions, he was quickly established as a first team player and a favourite with the United support. In November 2013, he signed a contract extension until May 2016. He finished the season as United's top goalscorer in 2013-14 with 17 goals and collected a runners-up medal in the Scottish Cup Final against St Johnstone. His second season at Tannadice ended in a similar fashion, with him again finishing as the Clubs' top scorer, this time with 16 goals, but he missed out on a League Cup runners-up medal, as he was suspended for the Final where United lost out to Celtic at Hampden. His two seasons with United were blighted with various run-ins with the officials.

In early July 2015, United accepted a bid from Celtic, believed to be around £1.5 million, and Nadir departed after an event-filled two seasons at Tannadice.

Timeline

  • Date of Birth

Nadir was born on this date in Karakoçan, Turkey.

  • Signed For Dundee United

Out of contract in 2013, Nadir signed for United following a trial spell during the pre-season of 2013-14.

  • United's opening match of the season took place at Firhill against newly-promoted Partick Thistle, picking up a point in their first ever game under the new SPFL Premiership. There were competitive debuts for six of Jackie McNamara's new signings, as well as a return to league action in a United shirt for David Goodwillie. The kick off time of 7.45pm on a Friday night did not deter a travelling support of almost 3,000 as the Arabs in attendance turned out to back their team.

  • Dundee United, playing in the red heritage strip for the first time in 50 years, progressed to the third round of the League Cup after a pulsating encounter at the Bet Butler Stadium, Dumbarton.

  • Last Appearance - Dundee United 3 - 0 Dundee

It was a scrappy start with Dundee doing most of the pressing but with their first foray into the opposition box the hosts went ahead in 8 minutes. Chris Erskine received the ball in midfield and lofted a pass to Nadir Ciftci in behind the Dundee defence. Goalkeeper Kyle Letheren rushed out to challenge but allowed the ball to slip by offering Nadir Çiftçi the easy task of slamming the ball into an empty net. The Dark Blues kept pushing forward without really hurting the hosts and as a result left plenty space for United on the counter. They were often caught with tangerine shirts bearing down on them and both Paul McGinn and Thomas Konrad were booked for cynical challenges during this spell. In the 28th minute Dundee had their best chance when Greg Stewart did well to beat Erskine at the bye line before laying back to Stephen McGinn whose shot was held by Rado Cierzniak at the second attempt. The visitors were left to rue this miss as the home side doubled their lead in the 28th minute. Robbie Muirhead held the ball up well before playing in Ciftci on the left edge of the area. As the Turk evaded Konrad in the box the defender was then adjudged to have brought his man down as Bobby Madden pointed to the spot. Despite already being on a yellow card there was no further punishment for the German. As he did at Dens in the last derby Nadir Çiftçi was as composed as could be as he sent Letheren the wrong way to score his and United’s second. The pattern remained the same for the rest of the half with Dundee continuing to win corners but never seriously bothering the goal and United always looking likely to score on the break.
