As a youth, Gerry had trials with Celtic, Man City, St Johnstone, Oldham, St Mirren and Hamilton before signing for Clydebank in 1976.
He joined United on a short term deal in the pre-season of 1987 after making over 250 appearances for the Bankies. After playing in a number of friendly matches, Gerry never impressed enough to break into the first team and was released at the end of his deal.
