A fighting second half performance from United was not enough to stop Rangers from maintaining their one hundred per cent record in this season’s Scottish premierleague. A Capucho goal down at the interval, Ian McCall’s side attacked this afternoon’s visitors with conviction and, as the second half wore on, it looked increasingly a possibility that the Tangerines might level the match.
An enthralling encounter at the City Ground was settled late in the second half when United showed great character to come back from 2-1 down to score twice and secure all three points.
There were contrasting hopes for both sides ahead of this crunch SPL encounter at Tannadice. Confidence in the United camp must have been as high as it had been all season following the superb display during Sunday’s Scottish Cup Quarter Final. With life not altogether comfortable at the wrong end of the table, the Tangerines’ wish was understandably a repeat performance and a vital three points. Aberdeen on the other hand still had one eye on Europe and must have been desperate to erase what for them must have been a horrendous end to their cup campaign.
Derek McInnes and Grant Brebner were reinstated to the starting line-up as Gordon Chisholm sought to make right last week’s last minute defeat at the hands of today’s opponents. Much was made of the superior numbers of Hibees that would be at Hampden but once again, the Arab support had a great day, outsinging their Leith counterparts throughout the 90 minutes and inspiring their team to a memorable Result.
Gordon Chisholm made two changes to the United side for their vital relegation crunch match against Inverness in the Highlands. The injured Paul Ritchie was replaced by David McCracken and there was a recall for Derek McInnes coming in for Stuart Duff who had to settle for a place on the bench. Former United hero Craig Brewster listed himself as a substitute for ICT.
Gordon Chisholm’s side were given a major boost prior to kick-off when Paul Ritchie was declared fit to play, and the Scotland international took his place in the United rearguard. Other than Ritchie’s inclusion, there was only one other change to the United side which started last weekend’s match at Inverness, with Jason Scotland coming into the starting eleven for the suspended Jim McIntyre.
