Born in Perth, Australia, Adam started his youth career with the West Australia National Training Centre before joining A-League side Perth Glory. A product of the Australia Insitutute for Sport, Adam made his professional debut for Perth Glory in 2010, where he spent two years before moving to Newcastle Jets in 2012. By this time, he was an established youth international, playing for Australia's U20 and U23 sides.
He scored 18 goals in 44 appearances for the Newcastle side and his form earned him his first full international cap in 2012. He also attracted the attention of English Premier League team Fulham. On June 24, 2014, Adam agreed a move to Craven Cottage for an undisclosed fee, signing a three year deal.
Injury affected Adam's first season with Fulham and a month into his second year, he joined United on loan until January 2016.
