Sam has been at Easter Road since the age of 12 and made his first team debut for Hibs as a substitute against Rangers in January 2012. After being selected for the Scotland under-19 side in August, he signed a three year contract extension, and was then loaned out to Cowdenbeath in January 2013, but after just two appearances a knee injury ended his season prematurely. Recovering well from his injury, he became a regular in the Hibs side during the 2013/14 season, was named SPFL young player of the month for February, and made his Scotland under-21 debut in a March friendly match against Hungary.
After the Edinburgh side's relegation to the Championship, Sam continued to be a first team regular as they reached, but ultimately fell short in the play-offs. After just a handful of games in the first half of the 2015/16 season, Sam was sent out on loan to Livingston in January 2016 for the remainder of the season. The loan spells continued with a season long spell at Dumbarton agreed on deadline day in August 2016, and a year later Ray McKinnon brought him to Tannadice for another year-long deal to try and help United gain promotion at the second time of asking.
Sam quickly became a prominent member of the midfield, and his move was made permanent in January 2018, as he agreed to a two and a half year contract with United. He missed just three matches during the course of the season, with United just falling short on promotion to the Premiership. He continued to appear regularly well into the 2018-19 season, but after several arrivals in the January transfer window, the midfielder was used more from the substitute's bench as United yet again failed to gain promotion via the play-offs.
