Originally from Stranraer, Callum moved to East Lothian at a young age and joined the Hibernian youth set up from the age of 10, and most notably played for the Hibs U19 side which won the League and Cup double in 2008–09. He signed professional terms in 2010 and remained at the club for five seasons. In between sporadic appearances for Hibs, he spent time on loan at Arbroath, Brechin, Livingston, Raith Rovers and Partick Thistle, before joining the Firhill club permanently ahead of the 2014-15 season.
Playing as a regular for Partick in the SPFL Premiership, Callum went on to make over 100 appearances for the Jags earning two contract extensions. Along with several others, he was released following the club's relegation from the top tier at the end of the 2017-18 season.
He joined United on a two-year deal just before the start of the 2018-19 pre-season, but initially struggled to hold down a regular place in the team, battling with Jamie Robson for the left-back position. However, by December he was the first choice, and held that position right through until the end of the season as United finished second in the Championship and just failed to gain promotion to the Premiership via the Play-Offs. In July 2019, Callum and the Club struck a deal to terminate his contract a year early.
