A former youth with Hutchison Vale until the age of 16, Paul joined the youth ranks of Ipswich Town in 2006 and remained with the set up until the age of 19. His first professional contract was with Livingston under manager Gary Bollan and in his first season at Almondvale he helped the club climb two leagues in as many seasons, winning back to back titles in the Third and Second Divisions, signing a contract extension along the way before competing for two seasons in the First Division.
At the end of his deal in the summer of 2013, Paul signed for Raith Rovers where he remained for two seasons, competing in the Championship. At the end of his Raith deal, he signed up for two seasons with Falkirk in July 2015, helping the Bairns to back to back second place finishes in 2015-16 and 2016-17.
Following his release from Falkirk in July 2018, Paul was signed up on a two year deal at United in July 2018, making his debut in a League Cup match against Elgin City. The defender scored twice in a home game against Partick Thistle in August, and was used in the centre of defence and at right back throughout the season, playing in all four play-off matches as United just failed to gain promotion to the Premiership.
