Having retired after a career which included prominent spells with Cardiff City, Rangers and Hearts goalkeeper, Neil joined United as a goalkeeping coach under then manager Csaba László on June 19, 2018.

He continued as a coach under both Robbie Neilson and Micky Mellon but did not register as a player with United until 2020, when a goalkeeper injury crisis led to him being called in as an unused substitute goalkeeper on October 7, 2020 for a League Cup match away to Brechin City.
