Biography

Davie began his career with Baillieston before signing for Rangers in 1956. He made his first team debut just prior to his 18th birthday, becoming a regular in the side in 1959-60. He was an integral part of the Rangers line-up, making over 370 appearances with 157 goals during his ten years at Ibrox. In that time he won eleven domestic trophies and was part of the team that reached the European Cup Winners Cup final in 1961. Davie was also capped 22 times for Scotland during that time, making his debut against Wales in 1960, and went on to score 10 international goals.

The winger came to United in July 1967 along with Wilson Wood, as part of an exchange deal for Orjan Persson. He made his first appearance in a friendly against Sheffield United in August and made his competitive debut a week later against Celtic in a League Cup tie at Parkhead. For four seasons, Davie was a regular in the line-up as the first choice left winger but, as an extremely versatile player, he could also play on the right and switched to that side for long periods during his time at Tannadice, also even taking over in goal during a match against Raith Rovers. He played in nearly 170 matches with United, including many of the Club’s early European ties against Newcastle, Grasshoppers and Sparta Prague, and was part of the United squad for the Club’s second tour of the USA in 1969. In his final season he was displaced by players such as Tommy Traynor and Ian Mitchell, and in January 1972 he left to join Dumbarton, helping them win promotion just a few months later.

He finished his playing career there, becoming assistant manager, taking over as manager in 1977. He then spent time with both Kilmarnock and Hamilton Academical before returning to Dumbarton for a second spell, winning promotion in 1984. Less than two years later he resigned and later took on his last job in football as manager of Queen of the South.

Davie was inducted into the Dundee United Hall of Fame in 2017.
