Beginning his career with Dundee in 1980, Stewart was a regular for a couple of years, and was in the Dark Blues line-up when United clinched the Premier Division title at Dens Park in May 1983. Six months later he signed for Aberdeen, where over the next fourteen years he collected two championship medals, three winners’ medals in the Scottish Cup and three in the League Cup. He was capped for Scotland 40 times, scoring one international goal against Argentina at Hampden.
Released by the Dons near the end of the 1996-97 season, he then signed for United, making his debut against Raith Rovers in March 1997. He was in the line-up for the rest of the season as United went on to finish in third place in the Premier Division and qualify for European football. He remained in the team at the beginning of the 1997-98 season, but soon dropped to the reserves until he was released in May 1998, when he retired from playing.
