David joined West Ham United as an apprentice in 1996, but after failing to break into the first team squad he signed for Dundee United for a fee of £40,000 in March 1999. Brought to Tannadice by then first team coach Terry Butcher, the Welsh Under-21 international defender made his debut as a substitute against Celtic in the final League game of the season. A regular in the side throughout the next two seasons, he played in semi-finals of both the League Cup and Scottish Cup but appeared less after the arrival of Alex Smith as manager.
A proposed move to Paul Sturrock's Plymouth Argyle in August 2001 fell through, but a year later he left to join Motherwell after a spell on loan at Leyton Orient. Whilst with Motherwell, David made his international debut for Wales - going on to win a further six caps - and collected a League Cup runners-up medal in 2005. He was sold to Bristol City in for £150,000 in 2005 and spent time on loan at MK Dons, Leyton Orient, Brentford and Swindon Town. Later in his career he had spells with Ireland's St Patrick's Athletic and non-League Cambridge United and Thurrock.
