The Belgian born defender came through the youth system at from Dutch club MVV Maastricht and joined United following a successful trial during the Club's 1996-97 pre-season games at Brechin and Leicester City. He made his first team debut against Motherwell in the opening League game at Tannadice and played in the next few matches until Billy Kirkwood was replaced as manager by Tommy McLean.
He was soon demoted to the reserves and in November 1996 his contract was cancelled by the Club. A lengthy appeal process followed, and the SFA and Scottish League found in favour of the player. The matter went to the Court of Session where a judicial review upheld the player's appeal. He continued to play for various clubs in Austria and retired in 2004. He worked as a coach in Austria and Switzerland, later working as a scout for Manchester United.

Dundee United 1 - 1 Motherwell
League (Premier Division)

The Belgian born defender came through the youth system at from Dutch club MVV Maastricht and joined United following a successful trial during the Club's 1996-97 pre-season games at Brechin and Leicester City. He made his first team debut against Motherwell in the opening League game at Tannadice and played in the next few matches until Billy Kirkwood was replaced as manager by Tommy McLean.
A great start to United's new campaign on their return to the Premier Division wasn't capitalised upon. With the Motherwell defence caught napping, Gary McSwegan sent a diving header past Scott Howie from Ray McKinnon's free kick to make it 1-0 in five minutes. More chances fell United's way, but they failed to take them and midway through the half, the visitors finally came to life. Only a finger-tip save by Ally Maxwell kept out Billy Davies first time shot through a ruck of players. However, the move of the match ended when Gary McSwegan shot past after great work by Dave Bowman and Owen Coyle.
The goal which won the match may have carried a slice of luck, but no one could argue that we weren't due a break after the way things had gone earlier in the season. Maurice Malpas made his first appearance of the season and it was no coincidence that the defence kept their first clean sheet with the player/coaches steadying influence back in evidence.
