Barry was a youth player with Livingston Boys Club for several years before joint Queen's Park. He finished his youth development with the Glagsow side and made his debut in 2008, playing two full seasons before joining United in 2010. In his second season at the Hampden club, he was the top scorer from the left back position.
Although brought to United as one for the future, he was used off-and-on up and down the left side of Peter Houston's first team during his first two seasons before establishing himself as the Club's first choice left back a season later when Paul Dixon made his departure.
He agreed a pre-contract with Polish side Lech Poznań on May 28th, 2013, leaving the Club upon the expiry of his contract that summer.

Peter Houston decided to stick by his men that lost narrowly to AEK Athens on Thursday and named an unchanged side to face Inverness. The only change in the personnel was Barry Douglas replacing Johnny Russell on the bench. Afer losing out to Celtic last weekend Terry Butcher only made one change to his side with former United man David Proctor replacing Ross Tokely in defence.
Despite taking an early lead, United succumbed to a late Marius Zaliukas header to leave the capital with nothing. Making the defeat even more frustrating, David Goodwillie's injury-time penalty was saved! Johnny Russell for Morgaro Gomis and Barry Douglas taking injured Craig Conway's place were the only changes from the side beaten by Celtic.
It was Friday night football at Tannadice as United hosted Kilmarnock hoping to get revenge for the 3-1 defeat at Rugby Park earlier in the season and bounce back from a 2-1 loss at Easter Road the previous weekend. There were two changes in personnel as Mark Millar and the injured Keith Watson, who was set to play up until the last minute, dropped out of the starting line-up and were replaced by Barry Douglas and Gary Mackay-Steven. Left back Douglas returned to the defence after missing the last two matches through injury with Brian McLean switching over to fill the right back void left by Watson. Mackay-Steven was making his first start since August after a long spell out with injury – Peter Houston was hoping that the creative winger would be able to continue his impressive form after scoring twice in his last three games, coming off the bench on all three occasions.
St Mirren arrived at Tannadice on a brisk winter’s afternoon for the final Scottish football fixture of 2012, the Paisley men going in to the match with some confidence following impressive performances against Motherwell and Inverness. United manager Peter Houston made one change from the Boxing Day draw with St Johnstone, Mark Millar coming in for Rudi Skacel, with the Czech Republic cap dropping to the bench. The visitors welcomed Jim Goodwin, Marc McAusland, Paul Dummett and Lewis Guy back to their starting eleven.
United welcomed Ross County to Tannadice for the day’s only SPL fixture, United aware that a home win would push the Terrors into the top six. Peter Houston made one change to the side that lost heavily at Parkhead in midweek, Stuart Armstrong returning to the starting line-up at Mark Millar’s expense. County were looking to increase an eleven point gap between them and bottom club Dundee, and manager Derek Adams kept faith in the same side that won convincingly in Paisley the previous week.
United made three changes from the team that beat Inverness. Johnny Russell, Ryan Gauld and Ryan Dow dropped to the bench. In their place returned Mark Millar, Rory Boulding and Barry Douglas who was available again after his suspension. With defensive options limited due to long term injuries, Jon Daly was again asked to play in central defence.
