League Cup (Sectional Tie)

For 15 minutes only did United look like tenants of a lowly spot in B Division. In that period they positively wilted under a terrific Thistle offensive which produced two goals. Shots rained in on Boyd. As a contest, it looked all over. Then the Dundee lads hit back. Skilfully generalled by skipper McKenzie, they found their feet and hustled and harried Thistle to such purpose that on occasion sheer panic entered into the ranks of the homesters. In the long run Thistle's stamina saw them through. The porridge-like pitch proved too much for the gallant Taysiders. Thistle can take a lesson from this game—it doesn't pay to squander chances, no matter how good early prospects look. After drawing level twice, United switched Pacione and Dalling in the second half. It was a paying move. The home defence was in sore straits towards the end of the first 90 minutes. A goal at this point wouldn't have been out of place. Thistle were sound in defence, with M'Gowan outstanding. Hugh Brown and Jimmy Walker provided the forward danger. Even though limping, Brown continued to "jolly" his men along in inspiring fashion. United's big men were Boyd, McKenzie, and Dickson. The left-half's goal was a highlight. Pacione and, in the closing stages, M'Kee, were the attackers likely to do damage. Pity 3uch a grand effort by the Leaguers should be nullified by such an unsatisfactory goal. They were really worth a draw. In the 19th minute of the extra half-hour, left-winger Jimmy Walker scrambled the ball home in a desperate Thistle onslaught. Gallant United were out of the Cup. Outweighed and out-gunned, the Tannadice boys had turned on their famous cup-tie fervour to thrill Firhill and give Thistle the fight of their lives.
