Biography

Archie started his senior career as a trialist with Alloa Athletic before spending five years with Forfar Athletic. In 1970 he signed for St Mirren at the age of 23, and spent two years at Love Street, as the Buddies were relegated from Division One for the second time in fife seasons. In January 1972, he became Jim McLean’s second United signing for a reported fee of £3,000.

The experienced midfielder made his debut at Easter Road days later, and was in the side for much of the remainder of that season. Playing just fourteen games the following season, he became a regular throughout the 1973-74 season, scoring 10 goals. Archie was in line up for United’s first Scottish Cup final 1974, where they lost to Celtic at Hampden - his runners up medal his only honour during his playing career. He played just occasionally over the next two seasons, and appeared more in the reserves, where he employed his experience to further the development of United’s emerging band of talented young players.

In July 1976, he joined Montrose, and later returned to Forfar Athletic as player/manager. He spent four years in the role before becoming assistant manager to Alex Ferguson at Aberdeen. In 1983 he became manager at Dens Park, but after two and a half years he returned to his role at Aberdeen. He followed Ferguson to Manchester United in 1986, then became Walter Smith’s assistant at Rangers in 1991. He went on to have spells at many clubs north and south of the border, including Everton, and the Scotland national side, and returned to Aberdeen with Craig Brown in 2010. He went back to Dens Park in 2014 in a scouting role.

  • The biggest difference between the two teams was Hibs skipper Pat Stanton. United, with Archie Knox making his debut, repelled Hibs' furious onslaught only to find themselves trailing to a magnificent Pat Stanton goal, his unsaveable shot giving Hibs a 32nd minute lead. The tangerines began to dictate matters in second half, only for Hibs to seal victory with two goals in three minutes near the end.

  • Dundee United's recent signing George Fleming made his debut for the Tangerines, while 'keeper MacKay came in to replace injured McAlpine.
