After impressing with youth side Gairdoch United, Alex started his senior career with Rangers in 1964, but was a regular in the reserves without breaking into the first team. After a brief spell with Stirling Albion, he joined Willie Ormond's St Johnstone in 1967, and quickly became a fans favourite, helping the Perth side qualify for European football for the first time in 1971.
Released from St Johnstone in April 1975, he was offered terms by Hong Kong Rangers but then accepted an offer to sign for United. A defensive midfielder, Alex made his first appearance in a testimonial for Brian McCann at Fraserburgh in July 1975, and then made his competitive debut in a League Cup tie against Kilmarnock. One of a number of more experienced players that manager Jim McLean brought in to help guide the younger players breaking into the team, he was a regular in the United side for three seasons, scoring his only goal for the Club against Porto in a UEFA Cup tie at Tannadice. Unfortunately his career ended prematurely following an accidental eye injury sustained against Ayr United in April 1978 - a year later, after three operations, he was advised to give up the game at the age of 30.
He went into coaching with Hearts under his former manager Willie Ormond, and had a short spell as caretaker manager at Tynecastle before becoming manager at St Johnstone in April 1980. He took the Saints to the First Division title and promotion back to the Premier Division in 1983, but then suffered back-to-back relegations. He later managed his local side Stenhousemuir in the late 1980s before stepping away from the game.
