Biography
Tom began his career with Dumbarton, signing professionally in 1971, playing alongside his brother Colin. He went on to notch 42 goals in just over 100 appearances for The Sons, and came to the attention of Jim McLean after scoring three times against United in the mid-1970s.
He came to United in October 1975 for around £37,000, as a replacement for Andy Gray, and made his debut the next day, scoring twice against St Johnstone at Tannadice. In his first season he netted 13 goals, including a hat-trick against Ayr United, to make him joint top scorer with Henry Hall as United survived relegation from the newly formed Premier Division by the skin of their teeth. As one of the clubs main strikers, he managed only eleven goals the following season as United qualified for the UEFA Cup, with braces against Partick Thistle and Kilmarnock. Although he had not achieved what was expected, it still came as a surprise when he was transferred to Celtic in September 1977 for £60,000.
Originally struggling to hold down a regular place at Parkhead, the striker was moved back to a central defensive position where he thrived. During his nine years with the Glasgow side, he won three Premier League titles, a League Cup and a Scottish Cup - playing in the 1985 final against United. Released in 1986 he joined Stockport County and had a spell at Hamilton Academical before signing for Motherwell during the 1986-87 season. He left Fir Park after three years and played for Airdrieonians where he later became coach.
