Biography
The Fife born forward joined Rangers as an apprentice, going on to plat mainly in the reserves, but was included in some tour matches. After being loaned to Benburb Juniors for a spell, he was released in May 1975, when he signed for United.
Billy made a scoring debut as a substitute in his first competitive match against St Johnstone in a League Cup tie, but with immense competition for first team places, Billy spent more than half of the season 1975-76 in the reserves, making most of his first team appearances that year from the bench, including a UEFA Cup appearance against Porto. After refusing to move to the Dundee area - as was manager Jim McLean's rule - Billy joined Dumbarton for a fee of £5,000 in September 1976.
Staying for just one season at Boghead, he returned to Fife, where he spent the next five years with Cowdenbeath. He finished his senior career at Arbroath in 1984, later becoming a bookmaker in Inverkeithing.

Just prior to the start of the initial Premier League season the Tannadice Top Ten side had already suffered in the away leg at Firhill at the hands of the First Division men. 3-1 down going into their home advantage. United did little better the second time around when Joe Craig added to the Maryhill club's lead with a first half
